THINGS TO DO & KNOW

  • Vinha Velha comprises 140 hectares sitting in the middle of the Mata National Forest, bordering the idyllic village of Barao de Sao Joao.
  • If you like watching exotic birds and the smell of eucalyptus, pine trees, and acacia trees, you should find time for a walk in the Mata Nacional. Look for stone sculptures that artists from the region have made.
  • A variety of stunning beaches can be found just to the south and west, where both coasts can be reached by car from Vinha Velha in less than half an hour.
  • Around the little town Sarges (~40 min drive) - the southwestern most point of Europe - there are a few highlights such as the light tower on top of the cliffs, the Fort of Beliche, and the Fort of Sarges that you shouldn't miss.
  • If you want to give yourself a special treat, make time for a massage with physiotherapist Indah. She offers massages on the surfer beach Beliche. More info at http://www.healthmassagesagres.com/de/
  • Monthly highlight: in Barao de São João a flee market takes place at the last Sunday of the month. If you fancy handmade things you will love the market. From home made food to soaps, to jewelry to music instruments and wooden surfboards… to so much more (furniture, books, bikes, etc.).
  • Saturday morning there’s a market in Lagos where farmers of the region sell their vegetables and fruits. You can also find hand woven baskets, aloe vera products, soaps, home made bread, and  pesto sold by members of the international community. Requires a bit of time, and sometimes a bit of patience too.
  • There is a farmers market from monday to saturday morning in Vila do Bispo.
